On Bodies 2006-2019

I wanted to create a body of work that acted as a tool of liberation and redemption for a related body of work I created while a senior undergraduate art student at The University of Manitoba 15 years earlier. The hippo-headed-human femme figures first appeared in my work while I struggled deeply with internalized fat-phobia and misogyny.

A decade and a half later, I became a mother in The Bay Area. I found myself immersed in a radical feminist and queer movement of body positivity, fat liberation and disability justice. I became fascinated with activists and writers like Virgie Tovar, Sonya Renee Taylor and Caleb Luna. I was compelled to respond to my earlier work with the intention of uplifting these diverse femme bodies into the realm of worship, erotic liberation and healing.
