The Solar Mothers are a sculptural response to work I created 15 years earlier while finishing my Bachelor’s of Fine Arts Undergraduate Degree at The University of Manitoba. These femme-hippo-headed-humanoid figures first appeared in my work during a time that was marked with my personal struggles with internalized fat-phobia and misogyny.
A decade and a half later, I became a mother in The Bay Area. I found myself immersed in a radical feminist and queer movement of body positivity, fat liberation and disability justice. I became fascinated with activists and writers like Virgie Tovar, Sonya Renee Taylor and Caleb Luna. I was compelled to respond to my earlier work with the intention of uplifting these diverse femme bodies into the realm of worship, erotic liberation and healing.
